Microcurrent is a bio-energetic current; meaning it is a wave form, which stimulates the natural currents of your body. This is like jump starting your car battery after leaving your lights on. Once the muscles are fully supplied with this regulating current (which flows normally in a healthy body) your muscles will perform as they should -- keeping your jaw in line.
What you will feel from this treatment ranges from something similar to a ballpoint pen being gently pressed against you , to a feeling similar to needle insertions in acupuncture, but there is NO puncture. The similarities to acupuncture don't stop there: One colleague of mine, an acupuncturist with over 20 years of experience, uses this technique in his practice regularly and says that the results are impressive!
In the scientific research of this method, we have repeatedly seen that this bio-energetic current quickly raises the energy level of depleted muscles (by raising their ATP levels dramatically) and this is accompanied by a profound and lasting relaxation of tight muscles. This ability to quickly release tight muscles is the most common application for this therapy in my practice.
As a Chiropractor, I find that unless I first treat the tight muscles (which are attached to the bones of the spine) then adjustments to realign the spine are less effective and less long lasting. Also, with some patients, adjustments are unnecessary, since their problem resides entirely in the muscles, ligaments or sheets of ligaments called fascias.
In fact, our bodies are completely enveloped in a single continuous sheet of fascia - our own biological version of the internet - which links all of our trillion living cells. This is why you will see me treating points, which are sometimes distant from where you hurt.
Give it a try, you'll like the result.

Which conditions are helped by microcurrent?
The incredible thing about microcurrent is that it is effective for so many conditions. In fact, with some of the conditions (like macular degeneration, which is the leading cause of blindness in the U.S.) there are virtually no other options for care that have been shown to promote healing like microcurrent does. It is also used often for common injuries like sprains, strains, bruises, surgical incisions, etc. Many believe (especially researchers in Japan) that microcurrent stimulation can re-balance the body's energy fields, so many applications are directed towards this end. I use microcurrent therapy, in this way, to address chronic recurrent respiratory, abdominal, musculoskeletal, and hormonal diseases - to name only a few.
What else can microcurrents do?
The instrument that I use, not only treats with microcurrents, but also can show me (the doctor) where the stagnation in energy flow might be in your body. Two probes are used for this test: one is placed on acupuncture master points and the other on a neutral point. The instrument then shows how much resistance your body is giving to energy flows. I use this to diagnose imbalances in the various energy channels, or meridians as they're called in traditional Chinese medicine. Once diagnosed, I then use the same microcurrents to treat the various sedation and tonification points for re-balancing the body. This technique is called meridian balancing.
